In simple words, our world needs a concerted effort at protecting this magnificent cat, not only because of its majesty and beauty but also because the tiger is at the very top of our wildlife food-chain. If the tiger population of its prey deer, sambar, gaur, neelgai, bison etc. would burst at the seams. For their food they would eat the vegetation. This would mean no habit for insects and reptiles which in search of habit would shift to farmlands.
The scenario becomes scarier as with the loss of vegetation the refurbishment of soil would cease and there would be a dearth of fertile soil which would result in no new plantation. This would finish the jungles and no forest and trees would mean loss of oxygen supply! Hence, to go back to the start, we need tigers for even the survival of humans! Tigers have been an integral part of our culture and in ancient Indian texts also the tiger gets mentioned.
Not only in India, world over tigers have a majestic presence. In fact, Thailand has a 'Tiger Temple' which have many tigers that roam freely and can be fed by tourists. This was established as Forest Temple in 1994 and monks take care of tigers. It has one Royal Bengal Tiger called 'Mek' besides Indo-Chinese Tigers. But unfortunately, here too a lot of controversy was generated because of man's greed.
